FAREWELL SOCIAL TO Mr. J. C. DAVIES.
A FAREWKMi social was given in the Criterion Hotel on Friday night to Mr J. C. Divies, on the occasion of his departure for Auckland, there to reside permanently. There, were present — Messrs Samuel, M.H.B. (olurivmaji), J. Paul, W. D. Thomson, A. M. Thomson,- >\» King, F. I. Corkill, C.King, C. Rouncll, 'Y. Hursthouse, D. Berry, W. L. Nowman, It. \3. Newman, 11. Westou, J. McDonald, C. ChmUnv, R. Fraser, R. Cock, W. Cottier, J. Bird, and Dr Loathani and others.
The Chairman, in proposing the health of the guest of the evening, spoke of Mr Davies' long residence in this district, during which time ho had made many friends, all of whom would be sorry at hi* leaving, through his business tact, social qualities, and his enthusiasm in outdoor games, especially cricket. In uttering theso statements the Chairman was certain that he only expressed the feeling cf those who were in attendance. (Hear, hear.) Tho toast was then drunk with musical honors.
Mr J. C. Davies, in returning thanks, expressed the regret ho felt at leaving New Plymouth after such a long residence in it, and thankod tho gontlemon present for the hearty manner in which tho toast had boon received.
The rest of the evening was spent in good fellowship and conviviality, and the gathering broke up with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" at half-past 11 o'clock.
Host Cottier provided the refreshments in a manner that left nothing to be desired.
