AUSTRALIAN TELEGRAMS.

Melbourne, April 16. A deputation waited on Mr Gillies, Premier, to-day, requesting him to protest against the clause in the West Australian Bill preventing legislation from imposing restrictions on emigration of British subjects to the colonies without reference to the Imperial authorities. In reply Mr Gillies said he did not think the clause in question applied to Chinese emigration, however lie would nonsuit the Governments of other colonies, and then refer the matter to Lord X nuts ford. Referring to the Primate difficulty the Art/its, while accepting Bishop S liter's statement that the election was irregular, states it docs not justify the position assumed before the public, and by no manner of special pleading can he get rid of the fact that he consented to and took part in the election. The spirit of the ecclesiastical law in New Zealand certainly is that a Primate shall he elected by the Church, and whether Bishop S liter is technical right or wrung there is no possible doubt he violated the spirit of the law, and brought the Anglican community into embarrasment. Tongariro arrived from London, via Cape of Good Hope, at o this morning, and sailed again for New Zealand at (5 p.m. She brings 20 passengers for Australian ports and 85 for New Zealand.
