♦ STRENGTHENING EVIDENCE. The police are said to be strengtheningthe evidence every day, the latest item being the identification of a pair of booth worn by the accused. As matters are now * going the police have every hope to sheet home the crime to the perpetrator of the outrage. The boots are said to have been identified by the maker, who is stated to have also recognised an alteration that was made in tlmm.
Mr C. T. Mills was appointed secretary to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board to-day (Wednesday). There were four steamers lying alongside the wharf at the breakwater on Tuesday discharging and taking in cargo, namely, the Wanaka, Takapuna, Gairluch, and Mohaka. At a meeting held in the Town Hall, Waitara, on Tuesday evening, of persons interested in the Waitara Brass Band, it was decided to hold a bazaar, the date of which is to be fixed by the ladies who have promised to assist. It will be seen by our Australian cable messsages that Rev. Father Cassidy and the Rev Father Aherne have purchased the steamer Terranora, and will engage in the Fiji trade. The gold medal won by Dominic Donnelly at the Easter Sports, is now on view at Mr Stohr's. Sir George Grey is, we regret to learn suffering from inrlauiatiou of the eyes, and is contined to his house. Mr Edward Waketield is said to be writing a book, entitled " The Hermit of Island Bay," which will be the most attractive work this gifted writer has penned. According to the Wellington correspondent of the Wanganui Chronicle. Mr Hawkins, late of the Wairarapa district, has purchased the Evening Press of Wellington. The magazine Zcalaiulia for April contains an article by Dr. F. B. Hutchinson, of Ngatimaru, on " The Higher Purpose and Meaning of Physical Education, with Some Practical Suggestions." The writer says the serious race-tendency we have to face is, in his opinion, one toward actual decay or degeneracy— in a general delicacy and want oi resisting power in the younger generation; in tiie veiy general premature .decay of the teeth ; in the great spread of nerve disease and disorders. He contends that it is tlie duty of everyone to strive to be as healthy, energetic, and strong as possible, for the satistaction of his own well-being, and duty to himself and family; for the value of his services available by the State — peraonal, civil, and military. The ideal set before our young men should be so to develop and educate their own faculties of mind and body that they may reasonably expect, if suitably muted, to produce an improved stock of I children, and thus help to raise the standard of the race. An extraordinary riot of women occurred at Buffalo on Feb. 2. Upwards of two thousand Polish women assembled together and endeavored to mob a Koman Catholic priest who had been appointed to succeed a favourite pastor. A force of two hundred policemen had to undertake the protection of the prieht, and they were furiously assailed by the vindictive women, whe threw salt and popper ir. » their eyes.
