By % lecent cab'egram I see that a new and highly attractive employment for ladies has been discovered, and an opening made in one of the hitherto mostexcluHive professions for the gentlor sex. Luiies within the last few years have been admitted to the practice of law and meiicino, and are recognised ns expert operators of the telegraph, the type writer, the telephone, the domestic ujop, and a hoßt of other scientific inventions of incalculab'e value. Sho may go on to the Stock Exchange, or the County Council, or into the gaol, the Post Office, the Divorce Court, or tho iiursery; and if ever I meet an anxious father inquiring what ho shall let his daughter go into, I say, '• By all means let her go into matrimony." Women'B rights have made groat strides within the laßt few years, and may be trusted to take care ot themselves iv future. When that strongminded lady, the Baroness Burdett-Contts, headed a deputation, numerously composed of h3rself and one other lady, to the London manager of the Waterbury Watch Company, and suggested with considerable force and the aid of a wolldeveloped umbrella, that the correct time was just as essential to ladioß as to the other sex, that gentleman took (he hint, and devolved the handsomest short-wind-ing ladies' watoh which has ever been soen and samples of which are now on view at Mr John Avery's warehouse in Davonstreet. This, however, is a digression. The opening to which attention is called ia the array, Her Gracious Majesty Queen Vie. having just been elected Colonel of the Prussian First Dragoon Guards. That this intelligence will cause the battlescarred old voteians of Jena and Austerlitz to blush right down to their spurs no one will doubt, but that is nothing to the effect that it will have upon the firßt hostile French regiment who are called upon to meet them iv mortal combat. Fancy the evolutions of the Prussian crack corps lad by a lady in the smart white uniform of the Dragoon Guards, No Frenchman would be able to stand such a sight for a moment. No dount Her Majeßty relic s on "the divinity which doth hedge a king " (extended by courtesy for this occasion) as an efficient protection from Maxim bullets, short rations, and the other thousand and one inconveniences of a protracted cumpais-n. The some cablegram that advised thi> appointment ulso notifies that the Emperor of Germany, after reviewing the English troops, remarked to the Duke of Cntnbnrigc "that the Enalish navy «nd theGirinin army were without equcl in the world " 1 wonder how the fine old duke — 70 years a soldier, man and boy, sir — writhed under ibis insult, or whether he flung hie boot at tho Imperial head ?
