By i lecent cablegram I see that a new onri liiahly attractive employment for ladies has boen discovered, and au opening made in one of the hitherto most exclusive professions for the gentler sex. L-uMcr within the last few years havo been admitted lo the practico of law and meiicine, and aro recognised as expert operators of the telegraph, tbn type writer, the telophoue, the domestic mop, and a host of other scientific inventions of incalculab'e value, Sho may go onto the Stock Exchange, or the County Council, or into the gaol, the Post Office, the Divorce Court, or the iiursery; aud if ever I moet an anxious father inquiring what he shall let his daughter go into, I stiy, ''By all means let her go. into matrimony." Women's rights have made great strides within the laßt few years, and may be trusted to take care ot themselves iv future. When that strongminded lady, the Baroness Burdott-Coutts, headed a deputation, numerously composed of herself nnd one other Jadj, to the London manager of the Waterbury Watch Company, and suggested with considerable force nnd the aid of a welldeveloped umbrella, that the correcv time wns just as essential to ladies as to the other sex, tbat gentleman took the hint, nnd devolved the handsomest short-wind-ing ladies' watch which has ever been seen and Bamples of which are now on view at Mr John Avery's warehouse in Devonstreet. This, however, is a digression. The opening to which attention is called is the army, Her Gracious Majesty Queen Vie. having just been elected Colonel of ihe Prussian First Dragoon Guards. That this intelligence will cause the battlesoarred old veterans of Jena and Austerlitz to blush right down to their spurs no one will doubt, but that io nothing to tbe effect that it will have upon the first hostile French regiment who are called Upon to meet them iv mortal combat. Fancy the evolutions of the Prussian crack corps led by a lady in the smart white uniform of the Dragoop Guards. No Frenchman would be able to stand suoh a sight for a moment. No douot Her Majesty relit s on ''the divinity which doth hedge a king " (extended by courtesy for this ocoafion) as an efficient protection from Maxim bullets, short rations, and tbe other thousand and one inconvenienoeß of a protracted campaiun. The enme cublegram that advised the appointment also notifies that the Emperor of Germany, after reviewing the English troops, remarked to the Duke of Cambridge "tbat tbe Entrlish navy and the Gtrman army were without equal in the world " I wonder how the fine old duke — 70 years a soldier, mnn and boy, sir— writhed under this insult, or whether he flung his boot at the Imperial head ?
