THE VICTORIAN BUTTER MARKET.

TO THE EDITOR. Sin, — I wish to offer a few remarks to my fellow farmers in the dairy industry on the market prospects for butter in the Australian colonies. I sec it stated butter is being exported to Melbourne, where it is fetching a paying price ; assuming that there is still a market there for it, it can only be a temporary, as it is a fictitious one, curious to say, arising out of the glut of local butter, that inducei the Government to take measures to relieve it, by giving a bonus of from one penny to threepence per pound on the prices obtained in the London market for Victorian butter. This has been so successful that the best Victorian butter fetches a better price in the London market than New Zealand butter, and what it will not pay to export commands a ready local sale, with which New Zealand butter, of even not first quality, may successfully compete for a time. Clearly, so soon as the bonus system comes to an end, which it will do when it is realised that it encourages New Zetland butter to compete with Victorian, the market will cease for us. Tho quantity exported last year from Victoria to London was 500 tons, and is increasing. In all our articles of produce, we have to consider, that irrigation from rivers, and stored waters aw well as the supplies of water from artesian wells, will ii. future very much obviate the effects of droughts, that have hitherto afforded us occasional good markets in the Australian colonies for our farming products. As the Auslralaniun says on this very subject, it is not protection that will settle the question, but the fact that Australian farmers are becoming aw.ire that they have j the climatic and other conditions necessary j for becoming independent of the products ! of New Zealand fanning. — 1 am, &c , Bovis.
