BICYCLE MEETING. Christchurch, December 28. The bicycle meeting was continued yesterday, when the two Australian riders again had the best of it. Fenlon won the 5 mile test race and Mayes the one mile race, but in the mile handicap Fenlon came in last in his heat with Mayes, the heat in which he rode. The final is run off on Saturday. The position by points is : Fenlon, 21 ; Mayes, 14 ; Hall, 13 ; Wilson, 5 ; Soames, 4. EXTENSIVE EMBEZZLEMENTS. Dunedin, December 27. The Otago Times is responsible for the statement, on reliable authority, that the late G. H. Ashcroft's defalcations amount to fully £6000. The railway account sulTcrs to the extent of over £1000, and St. Paul's Church funds £1300, and the balance is made up of trust funds and dishonoured cheques. DUTY ON AUSTRALIAN WINES. Dunedin, December 28. At a dinner, last night, tho Hon. Mr Fergus, in reply to the complaint from Mr. Scott, the South Australian Commissioner, about a duty of 5s per gallon on wines from his colony, said that the Government and Parliament of New Zealand were in favor of entering into a reciprocal treaty for the admission of South Australian producer free if that colony granted similar concession to us. Sir William Fox arrived this nvorning by the s.a. Wanaka from Auckland, and has put up at Surniii House, where he intends to remain for about a week.
