CHARGES AGAINST SEACLIFFE ASYLUM.
An inquiry was commenced at the Seacliffe Asylum at Dunedin, on Tuesday, November sth, before Mr R. Chapman, Deputy-Inspector, into certain charges which havo been made by Mr A. J. Bathgate, a cousin of Mr Bathgate the well-known solicitor, recently a patient in that institution, against Dr Traby King's management. The complainant, the chaplain and nine attendants gave evidence. The charges were (1) incapacity in incorrectly diagnosing the form of insanity from which the complainant was suffering when admitted ; (2) negligence in failing to see the instructions given to the attendant properly carried out ; (3) negligence in failing to investigate a charge against an attendant ; (4) illegal action in detaining the complainant for a longer period than necessary. The inquiry was resumed on Wednesday, but, owing to Mr Bathgate not being sufficiently recovered to bear the strain of continuous excitement, it was adjourned. The complainant was not present on Thursday though an urgent telegram was sent for him. Dr King made alengthv reply to Mr Bathgate's charges, and the inquiry will I>3 continued, to enable the latter to crossexamine.
