HALF HOLIDAY MOVEMENT. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir. — Mr Govett's remarks about the half holiday are to the point and deserve every consideration. — There is no reason that I can see why everybody should not have a half holiday on Saturday afternoons and divert our market day from Saturday to Wednesday. Auywuy whether the market day is altered or not, all the employed in town should have at least one half holiday in the week, and, I trust, those interested will put their shoulder to the wheel to try to turn it about. — I am &o, Tradesman. Alluding to the Chemis murder case and the evidence thereon, the Sydney Bulletin, says :— " There's nothing new under the sun. The case of Brannigan and Murphy, recently discharged from custody in England as innocent men, turned upon suoh evidence at the time (hey were condemned to death many years ago. One of the prisoners was found in possession of part of a newspaper of which the alleged other part appeared to have been loft by them at the scene of the crime." The Wellington Acclimatisation Society are sending 3000 fryiof the American brook character to the Taranaki Acclimatisation Society by to-day's (Friday) train. A large number of brown trout fry will be sent later on. It is estimated that about a quarter of a million o^a*will be handled this year at the central hatching at Masterton. Tli3 first match between the New Plymouth and Wangaaui Chess Clubs will be played to-morrow (Saturday) night through the medium ol; telegraph wires, | permission to use the same having been obtained. The local club will be repre sented by Messrs. C. E. Bawson, J. Bruoe, Q. Grey, R. Jury, W. Morey, E. Humphries, and Dr. O'Carrol). Mr E. Veale will be referee here for the Wanganui men, and Mr Downes will act in a similar oapaoity at Wungonui for the local men.
