MANAIA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

This Society was agaia mest fortunatt in getttDg a fine day for their meting, Which is now repogniied as one of tb»

principal athletic gatherings of tbe North Island. There was a good attendance, and tbe several svents were well contested with tbe exception of the strictly Highland events. Indeed, considering that the Society has only lately changed its name, the absence of tbe " men in kilts" was very noticeable. Several entries were offered for the events on the programme requiring Highland costume to dance in plain clothes, bat the Committee very rightly refused to depart from their rule. Tnere was therefore no competition. The one solitary piper discoursed "sweet music," much to the edification of tbe Highland element. The interest taken by the Maoris in the meeting was very striking ; ■ they not only produced good fields in the Maori events, bat took good places in all the eventß in which th<.y oompeted. The programme proved to be rather too long, Easter coming so late tbiet year, making the day very short, and a loss of nearly an hour at the start was never made «p all day. It was therefore nearly dark when tbe last event was ran off, though everyone seemed delighted with tke day's sport. I append a list of winners. This gives Minninex third place for the Cap. A. Good takes first place for the County, Briggs, who was fourth, taking third place. It was also decided that unless Stoddart consent to be weighed by tbe Committee before Ist May, tha money in the 11 stone wrestling event go to the next man.
