BOWLING CLUBS OF THE NORTH ISLAND.

The Auckland Bowliue? Club is the oldest in the North Island, having been established in 1864. The New Plymouth Club comes next, the green baing opened ia the spring of 1885. The Wanganui Bowling Club was established the following year, their green being opened on December 17th, 1886; whilst the Wellington Bowling Club did not come into existence until about 1887. The first Interprovinoial Hatch played between the Bowling Clubs in the North Island came off on the New Plymouth green between |an Aaokland team and a local one on March 4th, 1886, when New Plymouth was victorious, winning by six points, the scores being : New Plymouth, 60; Auckland, 54. The next match played was between the same Clubs, which took place • on the Auckland bowling green on Maroh 16th, 1887, and resulted also ia a victory for the New Plymouth Club, by nine paints; the scores being New Plymouth, 88 ; Auckland, 79. The first match between Wanganui and New Plymouth took place here on April Bth, 1887, when the local team beat Waagaaui by 94 points, the scores baing New Plymouth, 139; Wanganui, 45. A return match waa played at Wanganui on January 19th, 1888, in which New Plymoith was also the winner, bat only by one point ; tha scores being New Plymouth, 90; Wanganui, 89. New Plymouth ia at present the Champion Club of the North Island, and as it was Auckland and Wanganui's turn to visit New Plymouth, it was suggested that Wellington might join in, when the skill of the chief players in the several clubs could be tested in a bowling tournament. PERSONAL DESCRIPTION OF THB BOWLING TEAMS. We give below the names of the players who will take part in the Bowling Tournament, together with a short description of their ability as players and the trophies they have won. Having by na some engravings of the portraits of those who played in the last match at Auckland, we have utilised them again an this occasion. They are not all striking likenesses; but meat of then are recognisable, especially if tha gentlemen have been seen in their bowling garb :— New Plymouth Team.

" One of tha youngest membern of the Club, but a very brilliant player. Played in all interprovincial matches. He takea great interest in the game, and is the lift and soul of the Club. T. HCMPHRIEd. Now resident in Auckland, bat intends playing for tho New Plymouth during the Carnival for the same reason as Downei. Played against Wanganui in both matohes, and one against Auckland in New Plymouth. Ib looked upon as a very good bowler by hia comrades, and is generally there when he is wanted. s. w. jackson. Another rising player. Never played in any of the interprovincial matches, but showed himself a very good player in the losal Club matohes. By the way he playi at practice he should give a good account of himself. JOHN VI ALB. The newest player of the Olub, bat one of the most rising players we have. He takes a great interest in everything connected with bowling. He has not played in any match against any othar Olub. Another splendid lead. J. BANDERBOK. A steady aad excellent player. Always on the spot, and .generally carries out iuitruations. Played against Waaganui here. Will be euro to give a good aoootftt of himself. VBH. AROHDEICON GOVKTT. A capital player, and on a " keen " greea otoit reliable. Never played in any matohes against any other Oluba. He is now playing in a most deliberate manter, and will prove himdolf a great help to his aidt. 3. SAHSON. Would make a fine player if he would only praotioa more, and would rank at a irst class member. No record; but at tha rate he ia playing in praotice he ahoald have a reoord after the Carnival is ovar. I E, HAMMOND. A very cool player, and ono that attend* wall to instructions. Will, if he would practice more, make hi* mark. j. c. qeoros. A capital playar on a heavy green. Played against Wanganui at Wanganai, and proved himself a good exponent of the game. THE AUCKLAND TEAM. This team arrived by the Wanaka at midnight on Thursday. They consider their team is not as strong aB it might have been, on aocount of five of the picked playera having declined to go at the last moment. However, by the form that tke majority of them showed at the prtotioe on Friday, they will be found pretty hard nuts to craok. They have since their existence aB a Olub played bat two matches — both against New Plymouth— both of whioh they lost. They brought down four rinks with them, in ordar to play a full team against New Plymouth, which match will eventuate on Easter Monday. A fall acooant of the reoords could not be got, as the majority of them were new hands at the game. Appended is tke team in fall :—

The President of the Clnb. Is a good player, and will skip here. He has played in matches before. Won prizes this season, and carried off the ten guinea cup , last season. | G. D. BABRATJD. H« is the Yioe-President of the Club. H« is looked on as a constant player. Is a local prize taker this season. C. A. W.Y.GKB. A playei who should bowl well during the Carnival. Won prizes this season. J. BLUNDSLL, A good, coniistent bowler and all round player. J. O. MOBBBBOIT will act as a skip for his team during the Carnival. Has the reputation of a firstclass bowler. W. LBATHAM. It said to be a good average bowler, and •nt that ought to play well here. Has carried off local prizes this year. J. MACQLASHAN. Will be a skip here. A good all round player. Hu if on local prizes tbiß season. T. QALK. A bowler with a good knowledge of the game. Should be to the fore for his side. A. CAMFBSLL. Takes a rare interest in the game, and consequently should be well up in its iatricacios. Hoi won looal prizeß thii season. Vice-President's Bowls last season. T. BALLIK3IB. A player with skill. He ikould play a good game for bis side. A. XODOV6ALL, Said io be a really good bowler. He will have * good chance of distinguishing himself here. C. U. CBOMBIB Is said to be a bowler of some experience, which will come in handy m the matches his side play during che carnival. \T. GRAY Is a good player, and one who ought to prove himself a dangerous opponent. J. DTJTHIK, The Mayor of Wellington. He broke his jturney at Patea on Friday night, and is expected here to-day. Althongh hs v nominally a* emergency of the team, ho is in reality up here on a pleasure viwt. THE WANGANUI TEAM. Three or four of ihe members of this team came np on Thursday, but the majority came up in the through train on Good Friday night along with the Wellington team. The Wanganui team is considered to be a strong one, and with a bitof lack they should make themselves extremely dangerous opponents. They have already played Wellington onoe this season, and defeated them. The members of the team are as appended; — JfItBINNIE. He is considered one of the best players in Wanganui. Played against New Plymonth twice, and Wellington twice Won a local trophy in 1887-8 season, and also a trophy called Kirkwood'd. Good skip and all-round player. T. lISH. Won a local prize called Mr Alexander's, Is an excellent akip, and has proved himself a really good player in the matches in which he has played. Took part in same provincial matches as Bennie, and has " skipped." W. PATKBSOH. Flayed in all provincial matches as the above. Won set of bowls presented by J. T. Stuart in present season. He is a good third player, and an old member of the Club. J. Y.OONO. A very good player, who has taken part Ik all provincial matches. Won prize bowls in local competition in season of 1886-7. A. LAIRD. Well-known in New. Plymouth. Played in all provincial matches. Ib a very eonBtant player. Skipped a rink against Wellington for Association medal, whioh pulled off the medal for their aid*. He laid down the Wanganui green, whioh is said to be one of the beat in the colony. J. TAWBB. Played m all provincial matches. Won a seoond local prize in season of 1886-7. Looked on as a good bowler. J. V. COBDOZA. ! Is a good leader, and a constant player. Took part in one match against New Plymouth, and two againsl Wellington. 0. BOSS. f A good bowler. Has taken part in all provincial matches. Won pair of bowls in local competition in season of 1886-7. J. NOTMAN. Played against New Plymouth twice and Wellington once. Is a good skip, and an able exponent of the game. Carried off President's prize bowls in season of 1887-8. A. MCFABLAINE. Won Mr Bennies prize — gold pendant —in present season. Good leader, and a now member. Played against New Plymouth once and Wellington once. J. TUBNELL. Better known as a shootist than a bowler, although, as be is a new member, there is no reason why be should not win as much renown at bowls as he did with the rifle. Played against Wellington once.
