A scandalous case of military blundering has just been published among the Indian intelligence. A detachment of the 2nd Battalion of the Royul West Surrey Regi ment was left behind in Burmah as part of a flying column. Its duty accomplished, the part} -seventy-five in all- left Mandalay for Calcutta, and Buffered severely en route from cholera und enteric fever. The men, wasted with, fatigue nnd illness, arrived at Calcutta in the fiercest bent of June, nnd were promptly ordered off to Umballo, without apparently any breathing space to recover from their terrible journey. They left Calcutta station exhausted and faint- j ing, and in the fiery furnace of the train one man died, and several had to be left at hospitals by the way. Fif ty-tw o arrived alive at Uinballo, but of that number many were at the point of death. Professor Bell is settled in London for the season. He is interested in placing his graphiphono on.tbe market. Mr Maple, one of the London house furnishing kings, has bought the Newmarket' residence of the late Fred. Archer, and will start a large racing stable. Emperor Frederick died within thirty feet o£ where he was born and at exactly the same hour of the day.
