The Government have definitely abandoned any attempt to get a Bailway Commissioner at £2,500, and have instructed the Agent-General to ascertain whether a suitable man oan be obtained for £8,000. They have, however, yet to deoide whether they would engage Buoh a man at ouce without waiting for the authority of Parliament. AMERICAN SUBSIDY TO 'FRISCO RODTE. Begarding the offer of the American Government to raise their contribution to the 'Frisoo mail service to £10,000, it appears the United States Post-master-General so advised Mr Ureighton, the agent of the New Zealand Government at 'Frisco, some time ago, and he cabled to Wellington before the olose of Parliament. The Premier wired accepting the offer for the remaining term of the present contract, but the faot has only now been made public. A portion of the extra £6000 will go to contractors, who have a right to a share in it under their agreement.
