The most serious was that of the New Jersey coalhandlerp, which involvod a loss in wnjres to those engaged of more than £500,000. The cost to tho workers of tho Ponnsylvanian coke-workers' etrike in tho spriu-.', in which 13,000 men were entra^orl for ten weeke, was about £200,000 in wnjres. More than twothirdsof the strikes between January and Jul}*, 1887, were fruitless, and only brought loes and Boff' rinp: to those engaged in them. As a whole, about thirty-eight per cent , or more than a third, of the strikers io 1887 succeeded in getting thf-ir demands, against twenty prr cent, in 1886. It is calculated that nearly 10,000,000 da}fl' work were lost, while the loss in wages is estimated at £2,700,000.
