[per press association.] SAWMILL BURNI DOWN. Auckland, September 18. West Bros.' steam sawmill at Helenaville was totally destroyed at an curly hoar on Sunday mornng. The loss is £1,500, of whioh amount they are only covered by insorancs for £400 in colonial offices. The origin of the fire is unknown. A LUNATIC ESCAPED, Stephen Spanlding, who fired the Bemnera buildings about three years ago, has escaped from the Lunatic Asylum. IDENTITY OP THE PABSENGBR BY THE COLONIST. There is now no doubt that the passenger drowned at the wreck of the Colonist was Slear, a potter of Otago. Barns, the survivor, to-day identified his portrait, and his handkerchief has been dredged up from the scene of the wreck named Slear, making identity quite certain. ABRIVAL OF BALMOBAL CASTLE. Wellington, September 18. Arrived : Colonial Union Oo.'s s.s. Balmoral Castle, from London, via Sydney. The passage was uneventful She brings no passengers, but a large general oargo.
