CORPORAL PUNISHMENT ALLOWED IN SCHOOL.
At the Town School Committee on Monday night, when all the members wore present except Mr Petty, the question of allowine the second master of the Central School the power to inflict corporal punishment in his staudard — the 4th — was discussed. The headmaster in his report quoted the opinion of the Inspector (who was of opinion tint such should b? given), and recommended the Committee to ndopt the Inspector's suggestion, as tho knowledge that tho second master had the power to j punieh would some what hold tho bojs in check. __ Mr Snell was o£ opinion that it was ri^ht to give such power to the second master, as the refractory would then stand more in awe of him. Mr Okey considered that it would aot as k curb to boys who were inclined to be disobedient. The Chairman thought that such a power should be granted, bnt the Committee, if they found it was abased could^ cancel the resolution granting it at any time. He believed there were some regular " befeuties " who " shinned " like anything under tbe second master, and once these boys knew that their master had the power to punish perhaps it would deter them from misoond tiding themselves. Mr Hbndhy wanted to know of the Cbairman where any second master in this district was granted such power ; and if it was not the rule laiJ down by tbe Education Board that tho headmaster only should inflict corporal punishment in extreme caßes ; and by what authority they were working on when they Btated that tuch power ought to bo given. The Chairman replied that they were simply working on the Inspector^ suggestion, and whatever they passed would have to go to the Board to be endorsed. After some further conversation a resolution giving such power to the second master of tbe Central Sohool was passed, Mr BVniry only voting against it.
