TARANAKI AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.

TOWN EDITION.

NOTIGffi 09 MOTION.

Taranaki Herald Office. Saturday, September IS, 5 p.m.

THIS XXA.Y. An adjourned meeting of the Tnrarmhi Agricultural Society was held in tho Bridge Club Room at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Present : Colonel Trimble, (ohairman), Messrs. A. Kyngdon, Okey, Davidson, Olson, R. Street, Dingle, H. J. and J. 0. Honeyfield, Gorkill, Morris, F. Maoe, H. Newland, and 0. W. Qovett. The Chairman stated the purpose of having the meeting was to receive a report of a committee appointed^ at the last meeting to consider the question of a combined Autumn and Cattle Show being held. Mr. H. J. HONKYFIKLD said that he believed there was no formal report drawn up by the Committee, but the Corrmittee, he said, had decided that the holding of a Show on the raoeoourse wa.a out of the question. Mr (JORkill, another of the Committee, endorsed these remarks, statins; that the place was quite unsuitable, and the Committee had no reoommendation to make as to a Prodaoe Show alone, as they considered that that question was to be deoided by the present meeting. In that case, the Chairman thought the whole question could be discussed by the meeting, although be understood the Committee were to recommend if there was to be any Show at all. The meeting now was to deoide if the Autumn Produce Show should bo held. Mr. Olson moved, "That on ordinary Produce Show be held in the aatumn." Seconded by Mi.Okey. Mr Morris considered that as the Autumn Show generally resulted in a losp, no Bhow Bhould be held. Mr Olson considered that that waa on account of the high prizes given, and he suggested that the sub-committee, who be recommended should be members Jiving in or near town, should keep the expenses down too, for speaking from memory of the balance-sheet £30 were the advertising expenses, while £40 only waa spent in prizes. Mr Kyngdon considered that to ensure good competicion the prizes would have to be fairly substantial. Mr Govbtt thought that the Committee, if a lobs Bhould result on the holding of a Show, ought to be prepared to dip their < hands into their pockets, trusting at the j same time to the Society generally to help them. Mr. Olson, as a committee-man, considered the Committee worked hard ' enough, without Btanding th« brunt of a | loss. Mr. Corkill said he would point out, as he did at last meeting, that the Society, whose finances were not flourishing, should not hold any Show this year, but should husband their resources for the following year, so as their outstanding debts could be paid, and the Society could come out on a better financial basis. He would also point out that the Secretary bad been giving them the use of the office and his labour for years without remuneration, although a sum of £10 10s was voted three years ago, which he n3Vdr got, however, for the simple reason the money was not available. Should the meeting not fall in with his views, he would be happy to do all in bis power to make any show that they should decide to hold a success. In answer toMrKyngdon, the Secretary stated that last year 48 members paid while this year only 13 had paid so far. Mr QoviStt moved as an amendment to Mr Olson's motion, " That no Autumn Show be held unless the Society pledge themselves to make up any deficiency (in case there be one) as soon as this deficiency was deolared by the Committee." Seconded by Mr Corkill. Mr Davidson moved as a further amendment, " That no Autumn Show be held." Seconded by Mr Morris. Mr Olson's motion was put, 4 voting for it, an 1 8 against, tnus deciding on no Produce Show, and the other two amendments were then uot put, 'betas: practically killed by the rejection of this. Tlio Chairman then thought that the best thin? the Society could do was to decile on some menns of paying off their liabilities, fiomo £21 or £22. He thought tint each member should pay up something extra to fny off this debt. Mr. J. C. Honeyfield considered thai before this was done he would like to see all the members pay, for only thirteen hu 1 paid bo far, and yet there were fifteen of the Committee. Mr. Olson then moved that all members should be called on for their subscriptions, and in caae of there beiri& a deficiency then that a subscription list should be opened to make it up. CALLING ATTENTION. Mr Corkill brought up the question of asking the editors of the local papers to bring the lack of interest exhibited in the shows before their readers, as this failing on the nettlers part was not creditable to tho district. He put this in » resolution, which was seconded by Mr Mack and carried.

Mr Davidson gave notice of motion, in efEeot that the subscripton fee of membership should be raised to £1 from the beginning of next financial year. The meeting then separated.
