Melbourne, October 4.— Rupert's.Wood has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. The betting on tbe Caulfield Cup is 10 1 against Silvermine and Volcano ; 17 to 1, Meteor ; 20 to 1, Pasha. Little is doing on tbe Melbourne Cup, Algernon being strong favorite at 5 to 1 against. '*
The foUowing letter was read at the Land' Board meeting on Monday: — "We, the undersigned, being desirous of taking up sections on the land lying between Knight's and the Waiwakaiho River, north of the For/est Reserve, au4 south of section 146, Alfred Road, beg respectfully that you tnuy have the same surveyed and opened for selection as soun a < possible." The letter was binned by J. E. Williams, H. Taylor, J. Taylor, R. Taylor, W. I\^ - lor, and M. Williams, each of whom wishes to take up . 100 acres in the land , mentioned on deferred payment.
