OKATO.

I FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

September 28. ■— On Wednesday night as Messrs. Samuel and Paul were returning from the Rahotu meeting, the old approach to the former Stony River bridge was mistaken foi the new road, which still remains open. The old bridge was swept away some months since, and the old road still remains open, with nothing to warn any wayfarer of the fatal chasm. Fortunately the mistake was discovered in the nick of time, or two or three more steps and the whole would have been precipitated a distance of about. 20 feet into a Bwif tly running stream of about 15 feet deep. The horseß had to be detached from the vehicle, which wad run backwards to the proper courae, aud the journey again resumed.

It appears very strange and even gross negligence on the part of the authorities that such things should remain unattended to until an emetgency arises, and the more so when we consider that the same has existed for several months, and a member of the Council and the overseer are continually passing and repassing the spot. The School Committee met on Tuesday, 27th instant. Present: Messrs. Andrews (ia the chair), Corbett, Foreman, and Wilson. Applications were received for the appointment of a pupil teacher, and on the recommendation of the schoolmaster Master W. Binney was proposed for the appointment. — The Inspector's report on the Tataraimaka School was read, and appeared very satisfactory. It was also pointed out that the teacher suffers greatly through lax attendance, and a resolution was passed that efforts be at once made to ensure better attendance. — Accounts amounting to £2 2s 6d were passed for payment, which concluded the business.

Nearly the whole of the electors in this district recorded their votes on Monday, Everything passed off in perfect order, even the usual element of excitement and by-play incidental to such occasions being wanting.
