GOLD DISCOVERIES AT MANGONUI DISTRICT.
A considerable number or applications were received by the Auckland Land Bonrd for prospecting licenses to be exercised in several portions of tho Auckland province. Two of them were for districts in the Maneonm County. One was at Taemaro. This h a place lying to the eastward of the township of Mangonui, and is the name of a block in which the Government have many thousands of acres of unsold land. Dnring an interview with Mr.S. Percy Smith, the Assistant-Surveyor General, on the subjeot, the Auckland Herald says, "we learned that the geological formation of the Taemaro Block is very favourable for the existence of gold. The Blate formation underlies the whole o£ that and adjoining districts, | a circumstance which experienced miners look upon with great f avonr where gold ie found. Some twelve years ago gold was reported to have been found in this district, but at that time the Thames eoldfield eclipsed all other " prospectß," and thig was forgotten. The locality however is promising, and Mr. Smith would not bo surprised to learn that a large and payable soldfield has at last been found there."
