NOTICE TO CORRESPONDENTS.
H.H. (Wnitara) ashs us from what author Colonel Trimble quoted in his nomination speech at Waitara when lie mid, M Oh, Elliot, I charge thee fling away ambition : By that sin foil the angels ; ho*7 can man then Hope to win by it!" This quotation is from Shakespeare's Henry VIII., the name of "Elliot" biing substituted for that of " Cromwell" It is in that scene in the third act, where Cromwell tells Cardinal Wolsey of Cranmer's installation as Archbishop of Canterbury. The quotation m full is as follows, but we believe the latter portion Colonel Trimble omitted ;-— 11 Cromwell, I charge thee fling away ambitioa ; By that sin fell the angels ; how oan man, then, The image of his Maker, hope to win by 't 1 Love thys3lf last ; cherish those hearts that hate thee ; Corruption wins not mora than honesty." I We expect the Colonel did not like to utter the last lines, or they might be taken as personalty meant." R. 0., N.P. — This correspondent asks us who Tappertit was, mentioned in our critique of the opera last week. The character is a creation of Charles Dickens' } introduced by him in his novel of " Barnaby Budge." Be is represented to be 20 years old, and 200 years. in conceit, An old-fashioned, thin-faced, sleek-haired, sluirp nosed, ', small-eyed, thin • Jittle fellow, but ! thoroughly convinced' in his own mind I that lie was batti goodjooking and above the middle height, in fact, rather tall than I otlierwise. Mis figure was slender, which ! he was proud of; and with his legs, which in knee breeches were perfect curiosities of spindles, he was in raptures. He had also a secret notion that the power of his eye was irresistible, and he believed he could subdue the haughtiest beauty by " eyeing her. 11
