A TARANAKI MAID.
HER CHOICE.— A MODERN BALLAD.
(■communicated.] A country maid , and plump was Bha as any in the town; and in her own possession had above two hundred pound; and other tilings she had in store, in gear and chattels too, which made the lovers buzz about to flatter her and woo. Long John was first to eye the prize and seize the precious chance, to press his claims and urge his suit, full seven months in advance. " / The Colonel next with martial tread, and sword and bearskin too, marched up to this^retroating maid to vigorously woo. The Mabohant cried, " Old girl ! look up and view my graceful figure. I want your favor and your cash to give me greater vigor." Then Kelly caught the maiden's Iglanra, and said, "My charmer, say the word that maces us truly one, and name the happy day." The Maid looked shyly at them all as ogled and they sigbed; and them with sweet young bashfulness to each and all replied : — Long John ! You're not the man for me; you've not the slightest chance. So off you go to Waitara, with nothing in advance. Colonel S I cannot yield the fort, even to warrior true; my heart is otherwise engaged, or I would .yield to you. Marohant, my child 1 your flattering speech is spread o.at rather thin. I like more modesty in boys; Sonnie, you cannot win. Qo back to Coldstream'a forest glades, and, like the busy bee, gather your honey where you can, for you shan't gather me. And then the maid with pensive gaze viewed their retreating forms, and thought, Ah, me 1 Who now will shield me from the gathering storms ? Her beauteous eyes were filled with tears, and several dropped therefrom. Sne tamed, she sighed, and tben Bhe cried, " I'm thine, my dear old Tom ! " So they were married that same day. Judge Bawson joined their hands, and off they rode to Wellington to meet the gathering clans. And all the' people shout " Hurrah J there goeß an honest pair; and may they live to fight our cause for many a coming year."
