Australia is the land of democracy, says the St. James Gazette, not the poor theory-ridden careworn creature of our older world — but democracy rampant, exuberant with animal spirits, and eager to spend the money which it will not take too much trouble to earn. Already the eight hours' labour system promises to be universally adopted, especially in cities, where, as it is, the hours are commonly from ten to six. At the first stroke of the latter hour innumerable counterjumpers dart out with shutters in hand, and before the last stroke had ceased to reverberate, every man and woman serving in the shops appears to have jumped into his or her walking costume and to be .hurrying homewards. A number of the " unemployed " recently threw up some relief work which the Government of New South Wales had provided at 36s a week. No grievance was alleged, but the men fancied lighter tasks at higher wages. As te the coming sex, a good housemaid is bid for almost in the same way as a piece of Sevres china. The matrimonial market remains lively — rumour alleging that in the interior of Queensland " married women are open to take engagements for their second and third husbands, supposing their present consorts predecease them.
