Egmont Road. — A deputation from the Egmont Road, consisting of Mr. J. Hill, sen., and Mr. 0. Callaghun, waited on the Council in reference to a letter read at the July meeting, which urged upon the Council to sohedule 3£ miles of the Egmont Road as a County road. — Mr. Hill said this matter had been before the Council before, and he had been induoed to attend the meeting that day in the hope of getting some consideration from them, on account of the present Council having new , members in it. Tbe Road Board got little revenue from the road,»as a great area of native land, from which they got no rates, abutted on it. — Discussion eußued on the application, which, however, waß fiually answered in the nogative.

Oakum.— Tho Chairman of the Oakura Road Board wrote forwarding a resolution passed by his Road Board to the effect that the Coaimissioners ot the Oakura Road Board had been, "for the time being," appointed trustees o.C the Oakura Cemetery Reserve.

Hhifjineer's Report. — Tho Engineer reportod on the works in hand. Ho said that during the month of August the works wore as folkvt: : The men were all engaged in repairing tho road with broken metal and gravel wLrro it was required; tbe dry weather experienced having enabled him to get the whole of County roads in a fair state of repair, md also some earthwork where the roads were getting dangerous ; the dihh on the Richmond Road, near Lepperton, bad been cleaned, and repairs done to the road ; the drain at Ingiawood had been seen to, the cost being £17 15s 8d ; and a drain at the Koru Road had also been completed, tho cost being £6 12s 6d. A tender for a drain at Waitara bad been accepted, and it was near completion. The price was £24105., : which included a level crossing of atone 66 feet by 8 feet, instead of a culvert which was partly gone, and also a new oulvert.

MAINTENANCE OF COUNTY ROADS, j {Continued from Town Edition yesterday.)

After the adjournment the Council came out of committee, and passed the following resolutions that had been tabled by Mr. Kelly : (1) " That the contractors shall be required to get out suitable gravel from the pits as pointed out by the foreman on the various sections to the amcunt required, and suoh contractor shall state its price per cubic yard, and delivering it along the sections as pointed out by the foreman." — Seconded by Mr. Symk, and carried.— (2) "That the contractor shall be requested to maintain tbe water tables and the inlet and outlet of all culverts along the sections at a lump sum for each section, and shall aIBO properly maintain the surface of the road with the gravel and other material, in the terms of the specifications and' to the satisfaction of the foreman."— Seconded by Mr. Odtfibld, and carried.— (3). "That the contractor shall be required to place on the floors of the bridges suoh planKing aa may be required when pointed out by tho foreman, timber and nails to be furnished by the Oounoil at tbe bridges, and the contractor is required to stato the price pc/ 100 superficial feet for fixing suoh timber." — Seoonded by Mr. Stmb, and carried.— (4) ; " That the amount of gravel or metal ■ which the oontraotor will be required to place on the various sections of roads be not less than 20 per cent, below the quantity stated in the foreman's report marked A." — Seconded by Mr. Syme, and oarried. — Mr. Smith moved an amendment to tbe effect that the information contained in the overseer's report be attached to the contraots, which was seconded by Mr. Mobriß, but was lost on division. — (5) " That the Chairman be requested to instruct the solicitor of the Council to draw up specifications for the letting of the maintenance of County roads by contract, based on the resolutions passed by the Council." Seconded by Mr. MoGbeqor, and carried. — All these resolutions were fully discussed before being put, and it was decided to hold a special meeting on Friday, in order that the specifications might be before the Council op that day, and tenders be called at once, in order that the new system might be in* vogue when the present Council went out of offioe, which would be in November.
