The ss Oreti left Manukau at 1 o'clock to-day for the breakwater.
Captain Edwin telegraphed st 12-10 p.m. to-day: — "Expect heavy gale between north-east and north and west, with heavy rain and heavy sea, within next 12 hours; glass falling soon."
Members of the Temperance Alliance are requested to meet at the Baptist Chapel to-morrow evening, at 8 o'olook.
The Taranaki County Council's financial position is as follows : — Approximate income for the year ending March 31st, 1888 : Rates collectable, £2,200 ; Native and Crown Lands rate, £700 ; dog tax, £100 ; licenses (publican, slaughter, and transfer), £150 ; rents of reserves, £65 ; balance of subsidy due for the year 1886-7, £286 ; subsidy approximate for the year 1887-8, £500. Total income for the year, £4,001. The overdraft at the Bank "of New Zealand, which is the only liability of the Council, amounts to £2,200. Six months of the year having already expired, and the works done during that period not being paid for, will leave a balance after providing for the overdraft of £1800 for expenditure during the next six months.
