SALE OF LORD LOFTUS' EFFECTS.
An announcement which for pome,time lias been appearing in the Sydney newspapers, stating that a choice collection of sterling silver and electro plated ware, oilpaintings, Dresden and china, antique bronzes and linen, the property of Lord Augustus Loftus, ex-Governor of New South Wales, was to be sold at auction under the direction of the mortgagee, drew a very large attendance to the rooms of Messrs. Mills and File recently.' The attraction appeared to be that nearly every article bore the crest of His Lordship. The most of the articles offered were excellent in quality, and the sale was carried on briskly, while in many instances the prices realised were high. Among scores of beautiful and highly-valued pieces disposed of, the most noticeable in the varied collection were some presentation pieces to the Qovernor and a magnificent electro-plated table centre ornament, with two ten-light candelabra and epergne. These latter articles cost originally over £300, and were disposed of for nnder £100. A solid silver boar's head inkstand on a marble stand, bearing the following inscription, was sold for 5s lOd an ounce: —" Presented to Lord Augustus Loftus by the members of bis mission, in token of their affectionate respect. Vienna, December, 1860." There was also a silver cake basket, weighing about 100 ounces, presented to Lord Augustus on the twentyfifth anniversary of his wedding-day, by the 10th Hussars. Dther articles were generally believed to be articles which had teen received during the ex-Governor's diplomatic career.
