TWO MORE HOUSES BURNT.

Auckland, September 8. Two horfses on the North Shore were burned down last night. The fire arose in a six-roomed house in oourse of erection. Insurance, £500 in New Zealand, and £480 in Union.

RAILWAY BOARD OF APPEAL.

The Minister of Justice agrees with the suggestion of the Trades and Labor Counoil that a Kailway Board of Appeal be composed of three members nominated by the Governor in Council and the merchants of Auckland.

NEW STEAMBOAT COMPANY.

The Jubilee Steamship Company, whioh, is the name adopted by the Seamen's Union, is advertising for supplies for the vessels of the federation. STRIKE OF BEAMEN IN AUCKLAND.

The Unions throughout Australasia have agreed to levy 2s. 6d. per month per man to carry on the strike against the Northern Company ; this will provide a monthly income of nearly £3,000 over and above any votes made from the accumulated funds.

A CANDIDATE NEARLY KILLED.

Ashbubxon, September 3. Mr. Palmer, a candidate for Bangitata, was half lulled by roughs at Hinds last night. He had arranged to address a meeting, but his letter applying for the use of the schoolroom misoarried. As he could not get the use of the sohoolroom he stated from a doorstep that the meeting would be postponed. Thereupon a number of men pelted him with eggs and mud along the road, keeping up a continuous fußilade of missiles till Palmer got utterly exhausted, and he was com* polled to sit down and beseech the crowd, " if they wanted to kill him to do so outright 1 " Among the orowd were about a dozen horsemen, who pelted Palmer so unmercifully that he was compelled to use stones in self' defence. It is stated that the ringleaders are known, and they will hear more about the matter.

A movement is on foot to create a perpetual memorial of Sir Julias Yon Haasfc, in which the whole oolony will he asked to join. It will probably take the shape of a scholarship in connection with the New Zealand University.
