The rainfall in New Plymouth for the month of August, ia as follows : Rain wa§ registered on 16 days, and the rainfall was 297 inob.es. la August of laBt year, rain was registered ob 28 days, only being three days without rain, and the fall was 9* 66 inohes. While the stalls were being erected in the Alexandra Hall for the bazaar onThursday evening, a noisome smell was deteoted by those present, which seemed to be coming from one oE the cushioned Heats. On investigation it was concluded that there was a dead rat in the seat, and thnt the said rat was in a vary decomposed state,, judging by the smell that pervaded the uir in the vicinity of the seat. As it would have necessitated the opening of the cushion to get the offensive thing out, it was deemed advisable to carry the seat out of the flail, which was done. How the rodent came there is not known, but it is presumed that the rat had got in, and at some entertainment had been sat on by some one present and killed. It in Baid that the Hall is infested with rats, and that they are in the habit of pulling the staffing out of the cushions. The b.s. Gairloob, which arrived at the breakwater this morning from Onehunga, was in time to land mails and passengers for the Southern train. At the rehearsal of "Les Cloches de Corneville" on Thursday evening, the question of the date of its production was discussed, and it was deoided to give the firet performance on Thursday, the 22nd instant, and to repeat it on the following eveniag.
