A FIGHT FOR POSSESSION OF AN ISLAND.
A STIFF ENCOUNTER. Gough Island, ia the Spit Lagoon, in Hawke's Bay, long since reclaimed, has been a subject of dispute for some time between two well-known Napier men, who both claim it. Mr. Kinross recently surroanded the land by a fence. Mr. Heron the other night employed men to cut down a two-roomed cottage on it. Mr. Kinross tberenpon posted half -a dozen men inside the fence. As Mr. Heron's men shifted the room over the fence it was immediately smashed to pieces. The scene between the garrison and besieged was very ludicrous. The game lasted far into the evening. One of Mr. Heron's men started hacking the fence, for which he was given into custody, and has been remanded till Thursday.
