COLONEL TRIMBLE'S SPEECHES.
Sib, — la the interest of the district ie which I reside and the colony at large, permit m* to make a few remarks upon Colonel Trimble's speeches which he has recently delivered at Waitara and Inglowood. There- are a few points to which I wish particularly to draw attention, namely, his remarks respecting "Loans to Local Bodies Act," and his statement that "in Inglewood," h» believed, •' there were not twelve men in the district at the time who did not sign the petition to House against the loon proposed to be raised -by the New Plymouth Harbour Board." ' " ! Upon the first point (Loans to Local Bodies Act) I gather that the settler* of the Moa District hare no cause to thank their member for the £6000 which the Boad Board have secured under the ■ Act, nor for the I 'great, benefit which must accrue both to town and country from a judicial expenditure- of the -same. I consider it one of the grandest measures ever carried . ,td, facilitate the , progress of a country. To say that' "It is true that it twenty.- six . years the Government would get back £44 out of every £10C "is to my mind simply bosh, for I feel certain that the framers and supporters of- the bill would tender :us a ▼cry different, n.ore favorable, and equally as reliable version had they the opportunity. With regard to the second point, thn petition re harbonr loan,- specially to be noticed, I may say that I am utterly at at loss to conceive upon what grounds our representative could make, such an assertion, for I am fully convinced that a. very great number of the settlers in the Inglewood district turned entirely, against him ob account of his aotioni last .session on the Harbour Loan question. The matter aa explained was, very. simple, and/ did not warrant any "waste" of time in the House ever it. The bill as framed, if passed, still left_the_ pow_erJn.the^hands_of the ratepayers to make it of ..no effect, simply by refusing to pass a rate to cover the amount proposed ; for the measure was not a compulsory one. This being the case the aettlers considered that the . Colonel acted in a very, arbitrary manner in opposing the bill, thus refusing the people the power to say yes or no, and causing thereby much loss of [ time and money to the country. — I am, &c, ** Thos. Gk Lkech.
