LIBEL CASE. Auckland, September 18.

James Eaye has been committed for trial, for criminal libel on Mr. John Green, solicitor. The dispute arose out of money transactions.

LOCAL INDUSTRIES.

The City Counoil, through the representations of ironwokers, have decided to invite tenders locally for a new plant for the waterworks, instead of importing it. DEATH THROUGH A FALL, ; Wellington, September 18. Mr. W. J. Scott, landlord of the Central Hotel, while standing on a small table on the first storey of'the hotel yesterday afternoon, searching for esoaping gaa pipes, overbalanced and fell down the well of the staircase, falling heavily on his head, whioh struck the second step from the bottom. The fall must have been a clear 18ft at the least, and as Scott weighs 21 stone the results were, of course, very Berious. Scott received' a nasty scalp wound, and iiis spine injured. Scott is a wellknown I volunteer, and a frequent competitor at the : meetings of the New Zealand Rifle Association. He died at two this morning aa paralysis set in. The life of W. J. Scott is insured 'for £1500; £500 being in Australian Mutual and £1000 in the Accident Company. ; GOVERNMENT GOING TO MAKE A " HAUL." The Postal authorities intend to hold a sale shortly of the property accumulated in the Dead Letter Office, some of which has been in their keeping since 1862. The valuables are chiefly gold dust and nuggets, rings, cash, cheques and other monetary documents. Of books and papers there are a large quantity, which will be handed over to hospitals and charitable institutions.
