ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Auckland, September 11. Aichibald Smith tried to commit suicide by cutting his throat last night. Only a slight wound was inflicted. He appeared at the Police Court this morning, and "was remanded. BEGINING TO ECONOMISE. Auckland, September 11. A motion was tabled at the City Council to appoint a committee to enquire what reduction can be made iv departmental expenses, in view of tho stale of the city finances.
DEFAULTING MINE MINAGEH. Harcouit, the defaulting mining mauager, has defalcations amounting
to between £400 and £500. DEATH OF Mil. I. N. WATT. Dunedin, September 11. Mr. I. N. Watt, the late Sheriff and Coroner, died yesterday afternoon. He •was in early days in Taranaki, and then R.M. at the Bluff. DAJfAGKS FOR SELLING BEFORE ADVERTISED TIME. In a case at the B.M. Court, the plaintiff claimed £50 damages beoause the auction sale was held before the hour advertised, namely, 6 o'clock. This was an error for -which the auctioneer was not responsible, bat the magistrate gave 503. damages.
