[per press association.] THE PETREL CASE. Auckland, July 17. The Petrel case, in which Captain Beid and Foley (mate) were charged with wilful murder, has concluded. The E.M., as Commissioner under the Extradition Act, held that the charge had not been sustained, and discharged the prisoners. TIRED OF LIFE. Eleanor Bryce, an unmarried woman of middle age, cut her throat with a razor, at the North Shore, this morning. She showed signs of mental aberration. It is probable she will recover. CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED RAPE. James Todd, a young man, appeared at the Police Court this morning, charged with attempted rape on Miss Bowers, at her house, Newton Eoad, last night. The prisoner was arrested while struggling on the floor with the lady, who is what is called an " old maid," and who was screaming for help. The case was remanded.
