AN EXPLANATION AND REQUEST.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — In your issue of June 26th you state that a short time ago an advertisement appeared in one of the Gisborne papers inviting young men who wished to be assisted to the gold-fields to meet at the Wesleyan Church; and you stute that " tho rev. gentleman had taken this method of attracting their attention to the gold-fields of the sky." Allow me to state that Mr. Wills had nothing to do with the advertisement. Mr. Wills disclaimed all connection with it at the meetiny, and his explanation was heartily received. The explanation was given before the religious meeting was opened, and as a matter of courtesy the men who had assembled were invited to remain ; and so far from public indignation evinced inducing Mr. Wills to write, what you term "half explanation and half apology," on the very next day, before there was time for any expression of public feeling, Mr. Wills published tho facts of the case, and strongly expressed his disapproval. I frankly and publicly confess that I, and I alone, was responsible for the advertisement, and that Mr. Wills and every other member of the church are entirely without fault in the matter. I deeply regret the occurrence, and can only say in self-defence that I thought the notice would be understood, as the service had already been announced from the pulpit; but I now see my advertisement was quite misleading. I have bow to make one request, viz., that you and all other editors who have given publicity to this unfortunate affair, ib justice to Mr. Wills, will publish this account of it. Apologising to Mr. Wills for the false impression of him I have occasioned, and begging space in your journal, — I am, &c, WILUAM SSABLE, JtJN.

The famoas volcano of Kilauen, ia the Sandwich Islands, is again threatening. On the Ist June a very bright reflection was Been shining up from the crater, and on investigation it was found to proceed from molten lava. The manager of the volcano house reports that the place where the fire has broken through is to the right of Halemaumu proper, from one of -the holes which has been emitting heavy columns of smoke for the last two months. The melten lava, being a little below the edge of the renr, could not be plainly seen. The opening, which was only four or five feet in diameter, has increased to about 50ft. The reflection is plainly seen from the volcano house, and it appears to be very steady. One of the guides, an authority on volcanic nctioD, says the fire is too great to disappear again, and he is confident of an increase. The head of the Jesuit order has published the statistics of the order, showing that it counts 2500 missionaries, and that it_ can boast of having had 248 saints, 1500 martyrs, 13 popes, 60 cardinal?, 4000 archbiahopß and bishops, and 60C0 authors. It 18 said that an able Paper, written by Sir Robert Stout, Premier of New Zealand, and noting the wonderful progress made by that Colony during the last twenty years, will be read before the Statistical Society shortly. Hollowat's • Ointment and Pills. — Notable Facts. — Intense heat augments the annoyances of skin disease, and encourages the development of febrile disorders ; wherefore they should, as they may, be removed by these detergent and purifying preparations. In stomach complaints, liver affections, pains and spasms of. the bowels, Holloway's ointment well rubbed over the affected part immediately gives the greatest ease, prevents congestion and inflammation, checks the threatening diarrhoea and averts incipient cholera. The poorer inhabitants of larger cities will find these remedies to be their best friend when any pestilence rages, or when from unknown causep, eruptions, boils, absccsp, or ulcerations oetoken the presence of taintß or impurities within the system, and call for instont and effective curative medicinee. 10 (For continuation ol news see 4th page.)
