ENTERTAINMENT AT EGMONT ACADEMY.
The pupils attending the EgraontAcademj', assisted by three young lady friends, gave an entertainment last night. Everything went off splendidly. The first portion of the programme consisted of songs, and pianoforte pieces. As several of the young ladies were suffering from colds, Miss Humphries kindly sang a|number of songs, with her usual good taste. The event of the evening however, was the charade, which was acted with great verve and spirit. Miss Ella Cottier, as Sabrina (the Colonel's housemaid), Miss Emily Collis, a« Aunt Deborah (an old young lady), Miss Nellie Ford, as "Tom" (Aunt Deboruh's nephew), Miss Beatrice Humphries, as Mrs. Howitzer (the Colonel's wife), Miss K. Halse, as Julia (Tom's sister), Miss G. Morton, as Mrs. McCarthy (the Colonel's Irish cook), were all exceedingly good. Miss Cottier (Sabrina), Miss Ford ("Tom"), Miss Morton (Mrs. McCarthy), and Miss Collia (Aunt Deborah) all received an encore. The old Spartan spirit has not yet died out, for Mr. Harry Gilmour, assisted by two other gentlemen, although aware that a fiat bad gone forth prohibiting any member of the male sex from being present, spared no trouble in fitting up a perfect gem of a stage, draped with scarlet cloth, and having curtains and footlights — the whole forming a perfect work of art. The entertainment has been unanimously voted a success. The proceeds are to be devoted to placing two seats in the Recreation Grounds.
A sacred service of song, entitled " Little Dot," will bo given in tho Primi- j tiye Methodist church this evening. The Recreation Grounds Board wish to acknowledge a donation of £1 55., the proceeds of a private entertainment given by Mrs. Dougherty's pupils. 'It is said that the Imperial Hotel changed hands to-day, it having passed into the hands of Mr. Craig, of Lawrence, Otago. A paper in Auckland called the Evening Bell published on Monday last the first chapter o€ Genesis, from the revised edition of the Bible. There was a large demand for the paper owing to the runners calling out <l New account of tho creation of the world." An Arizona sporting man was recently inveigled into a church fair, and induced to try bis hand at the wheel of fortune. In half an hour he had all the money in the bunk and a mortgage on the church. He very considerately gave them back the mortgage, and in future the church will choose its victims with more care.
