EDUCATION BOARD.

Tub Education Board met on Wednesday. Present: Messrs. Veale (Chairman), Bauchope, Bluck, Elliot, Andrews, Faull, Wade, and Dr. O'Carroll. Memorial from Huirungi. — 'A letter was received from the Chairman of No. 8 School Committee, enclosing a memorial of householders asking the Board to grant a division of Iluirangi district. — Mr. Bluck proposed, and Mr. Bauchope seconded, " That the petition of the householders of the Huirangi district be referred to No. 8 Committee, with a request that such Committee will advise the Board of their views on the matter." — Carried. Scholarships. — The Inspector sent in a list of twenty candidates for the scholarships. — The Secretary was instructed to get the necessary papers for scholarship examinations printed. West School. — The sub-Committee appointed to report on the fencing at the West School recommended, as a temporary measure, that Mr. Honeyfield's proposal to fence the section and give him the use of it, be adopted ; or, as an alternative plnn, to erect a temporary post and wire fence, the Board paying their share of the expense. — The Board gave the Committee authority to carry out their recommendations. Rent AJJowanee. — Mr. Toms applied for rent allowance, but the Board w«re unable to accede to the request.. Charge for Tuition. — Mr. Petty waited on the Board re the charge for his daughter's tuition under Mr. Foulis. — The Board recognised the claim, but no other action was taken. Arrears of Salary. — Mr. Stock waited on the Board and asked for payment of salary claimed to be due to him. — The Board declined to recognise the claim. Waitara East School. — A letter was received from Mr. Everiss, the newly appointed teacher for Waitara East, stating he would arrive from Weslland in time to open the school on January 19th. — The Chairman stated that arrangements had been made with Mr. Tyrer to undertake charge of the school till the end of the year. Instructing Pupil Teachers. — Mr. Phil lips, of Waitara school, was voted £5 for instructing pupil teachers. , Stratford School. — It was resolved on Dr. O'Carroll's motion " That on account of the favorable report op the sewing of Stratford school, the recommendation of No. 12 Committee that Miss Johnson be appointed as sewing mistress, be acceded to." Courtenaij-street School. — The recommendation of the No. 3 School Committee that Miss Scott be appointed assistant teacher of the Courtenay-street school was adopted; salary to beat the rate of £65 per annum for six months. New Appointments. — Mr. Andrews 1 resolution, "That the Board advertise for assistant teachers for Bell Block, Lepperton, and Central School," was carried. Lepperton School. —It was resolved "That the Chairman of No. 8 School Committee be informed that the Board will re-advertise for an assistant teacher for the Lepperton school, and that Miss Kate Hall be retained until her successor be appointed." Alteration of Board Meetings. — It was resolved "That no alteration or postponement ofwthe regular meetings of the Board be made without the consent of the Board at an ordinary Board meeting." High School. — Mr. Samuel's telegram, stating that £200 had been voted for this school, was read." Bell Block— The schoolmaster at Bell Block reported an increase in attendance, and asked tliat an assistant teacher be appointed. — The appointment is to be made. Warea School. — Mr. Elliot made a report re a school between Okato and llahotu, and recommended Warea as the best site, and the Board decided to fix the school there. A temporary school will be opened in the course of a week. Oaonui. — Mr. Elliot recommended the Board to secure a school site at Oaonui, between Rahotu and Opunake, as that district was being rapidly occupied, and a school would soon be needed. The matter is for the present left in abeyance. New School District. — It was resolved "That in response to a requisition from the settlers of^the Warea district, ;to form a school district between Warea and Stony River, a new school district be formed in accordance with the boundaries laid down in the Chief Surveyor's report, and that Mr Elwin be asked to act as commissioner until the election of a committee." Lapsed Meeting. — The Chairman explained that at the request of several members of the Board he had requested the Secretary to give notice that the meeting on the 12th would be allowed to lapse, as the count)' election took place that day and several members, on that account, would be unable to be present. Punishment. — The Board were of the opinion thiit the case of corporal punishment inflicted by a pupil teacher did not call for special action. Henceforth, however, the head master only would inflict punishment. The general opinion seemed to bo that it was undesirable to encourage parents to run to the board with complaints in such matters, as punishment was a necessity. A wish was expressed that in all matters, parents should communicate direct to the head master, iDbtcad o£ to assistants as 'at present. Accounts. — £15 10s Id. was pashed for payment.
