REPLY TO MR. Wm. BAYLY.

TO THE KUITOR. Sir,—l again give an unqualified denial to Mr. Bayly's assestions, and challenge him to the proof that the Jockey Club have over attempted to acquire tho Reserve solely' for their own use ; and further, as Secretary I assert and declare that the Club have only asked-^and that iv a perfectly opni and legitimate manner—that the Government sltoiild vest tho Reserve in the Council or other Trustees for recreation purposes ; and I would ask Mr. Bayly as head of the Councilj why the correspondence from tho Minister for Crown Lauds, in December last, relative to this subject, I.as never been made public ? I feel sure had this information not been suppressed a great deal of ill-feeling aud unpleasantness amongst tho public would lwvo been avoided,

The charge of attempting to throw dust in the eyes of the ratepayers, I repel with tho contempt that it merits — it scents too strongly of the proverbial red herring, knowing, as we do, how anxious Mr. Bayly is to have his right-hand-man in Council again — and I assert that, whether my opinion with regard to this Reserve being set apart for recreation purposes is right or not, my actions have been thoroughly above board and honestly for what I consider the best interests of the community. — I am, &c, Jas. Paul, Hon. Sec. T.J.C.
