LARGE FIRE IN AUCKLAND.

[per press association.] A fike broke out at two o'clock this morning in the centre of a block of five wooden shops, Wyndham-street, Auckland. The conflagration originated in a shop and tenement occupied by Jacobs, a bootmaker. Jacobs has a wife and two children who slept in the upper storey, and narrowly escaped. Mrs. Jacobs was awakened by the bedroom becoming full of smoke ; at the same time she noticed flames issuing from the shop window be!ow. A neighbour, attracted by screams, procured a lac der and rescued one of the children by the window. Mrs. Jacobs, in her excitein< nt, got out at the other window and fell to the ground, but escaped unhurt. Jacobs and the other child escaped by clambering into the window of an adjoining shop. The Fire Brigade succeeded in confining the ravages of the fire to Jacobs' shop, though Hare's stationery, Cavanagh's grocery, and Buctown's second-hand shops and stocks were much injured. Jacobs' stock was insured for £100 in Standard ; Hare's, £200 in Norwich Unioa j Cavanagh s, £150 in South British ; Buctown's, £50 in Union. Tho buildings, which belonged to Glenfield and Mason, were burnt a few months ago. Later. —The block was insured in the South British for £7000. The estimated loss to building is £500.
