INGLEWOOD.

[from our own correspondent.] October 2. — Last evening, the Taranaki Minstrels gave an entertainment in aid of the fund for reducing the debt on the Roman Catholic Church property. lam sorry to say that it was not by any means numerously attended. I believe the time at which it was given was unfavourable, as the circus is about to give an exhibition here within a few days, und there is a large dance to come off on the 12th; and dancing, and circus performances both seem to draw well here. I have noticed before that when two or three performances are held here within a week, one out of the lot is pretty sure to go to the wall. Whether it is that farming will not support too many social evenings, or whether it is that settlers will not face the mud roads so often I cannot say, perhaps, both are causes tending to the same effect. However, be the cause whatever it may, I was sorry to see that the spirited, and able performance of our New Plymouth friends met with but a very inadequate patronage. The Programme is rather too long to give it you in full. Mr. A. Martin sang " Over the garden wall" in a way which evoked applause. Mr. W. Lee sang "Nobody's Child" very bumurously, and Master Wainhouse's song " The Vacant Chair " was much appreciated. The performance on the Piano and Violin during one of the intervals by Mr. Homeyer, and Mr. Johnson was very effective. The stepdancing introduced in some of the songs, was very neatly and gracefully executed. In fact the whole performance including the Farce was well gone through.
