THE SENTENCE OF MAHUKI AND
HIS FOLLOWERS.
NATIVES INTERVIEW THE
GOVERNOR.
[telegraphed by pbbss association.] Te Wetere (Wahanui's brother), Ngatiauru to Haere, who was assaulted when with Hursthouse's party, and other Ngatimaniapoto chiefs, had an interview with the Governor, accompanied by the Hon. Mr. Bryce. The chiefs welcomed the Governor. His Excellency^ expressed his pleasure at the natives assisting Mr. Bryce in opening the country and maintaining order.
The jury returned a verdict of " Guilty" against Mahuki and followers for assault on Aubin, the storekeeper, and acquitted them on the charge of riot in Alexandria. The other charges were withdrawn by the Crown Prosecutor.
Mahuki Tiini Hamilton has been sentenced to 12 months' hard labor ; Pu Puatahi and Ngawharo 9 months', and all the rest 6 months. Mahuki said tho sentence was just, but God and Te Whiti had power to save him.
