LAND BOARD.

The Land Board met on Monday. Present: The Chief Commissioner (chairman), and Messrs. Standish, Crompton, and Syme. Payment of Instalments. — Mr. Taylor waited on the Board and explained why he had not paid tbe instalment due upon section 49, Moa. — On the motion of Mr. CnoMrTON it was resolved, "That the Receiver be authorised to accept payment." — The Chairman explained that John Hill, reported as a defaulter, had paid his instalment before the due date, but owing to an oversight the money had not been paid into the revenue. Application for Land. — An application was received from D. Watkin to purchase suburban section 38, block 1, Stratford. — It was resolved to offer the section for sale by auction. Sub-httinq. — A letter was received from Mr. G. D. Hamerton, solicitor, Patea, asking if a deferred payment selector could sub-let a portion of his holding for the purpose of improvement. — The Chairman was instructed to reply that the Board could not recognise any such transaction. Eelension of Time. — A letter was received from W. Sudfcldt stating that he was unable to meet the payment of two instalments due by him on section 173, Moa, as ho had met with an accident which prevented him doing a full day's work ; and he had also sustained heavy losses. He would pay one instalment now, and request the Board to grant him an extension of time for paymont of tho other instalment. — The Board granted an extension of time for twelve months. — A letter was alse received from J. Rumbold stating that ho was unable to pay the two instalments on section 160. Moa, and requesting time for payment. — The Board granted the Bame concession as in the previous case. Resignation of Mr. C. D, Whitcombe. — The Chief Commissioner (Mr. Whitcombe) stated that he had been compelled, owing to ill-health, to request the Government to relieve him of his duties at the end of the current month, in order that he might be able to take up his abode in the vicinity of Lake Rotorua. This would, therefore, be the last meeting of the Board at which he would preside. — It was resolved on the motion of Mr. Standish, seconded by Mr. CitOMi'TON, "That the members of the Board learn with very deep regret that Mr. C. D. Whitcombe has been compelled, through ill-health, to forward to the Government tho resignation of his appointment as Chief Commissioner, and tho members feel they cannot permit the retirement of Mr. Whitcombe without bearing testimony to the able, efficient, and courteous manner he has ever discharged his duties, and to tho great interest and zeal he has displayed in the administration of tho waste lands of tho Crown, and would express a hope that the Government may see their way still to emploj' his undoubted talents and valuable services in some other capacity in tho district where his ill-health will for a time compel him to reside."-Mr. Whitcomiie thanked tho Board for their kind expression towards him. He regretted having to loavo the Province, and to have to commence life afresh in a new capacity. He had always taken an interest in the duties of his office, and it was much against his will that he left it. He thanked them for tho cordial manner in which they had always co-operated witli him in the administration of the waste lands of tho Crown in this district. The Board then adjourned.
