[PER TOUTED PRESS ASSOCIATION], SENDING LONG-SENTENOED PRISONERS TO WELLINGTON. Auckland, June 19. Five long-sentenced prisoners have been sent to Wellington, per Oreti, to assist in the construction of the new gaol there. Amongst them are the notorious Fred Plummer, ten years for burglary and sending threatening letters ; and W. T. Boltou, ten years for forgery and horse stealing. A SAILOR DROWNED. The Captain of the Mendoza reports that a seaman named John Taraghan, fell overboard and was drowned during the voyage. TRAGICAL CASE OF SUICIDE. A terrible tragedy took place in Chapel-street this morning. A millhand named Henry Foreman, aged 22, and married seven weeks, took down his carbine, and threatened to shoot his wife. She ran out of the house, but had not gone many yards betore she heard a shot. On returning with neighbors Foreman was found dead with a large hole over the region of his heart. Jealousy is the assigned cause. Mrs. Foreman is enciente. Deceased was a member of the Naval Brigade. STEAMER FROM FIJI. The Taiaroa has arrived from Fiji. No news of importance. WRECK SOLD. Wellington, June 17. The brigantine Isabella, wrecked recently at Poverty Bay, has been sold, and realised £165. She was insured in the South British for £525, and National for .£l5O. GOLD BUSH TO WOODSTOCK. Hokitika, June 17. Curnick and party, at Woodstock rush, washed-up on Saturday and obtained 220 ozs. of gold as the result from 40 loads of wash-dirt. A number of other claims will wash-up immediately ; they having been waiting for water. The rush is extending daily, and there are about 1,200 men on the field. COMET VISIBLE. Chhistchurcu, June 19. A fracas occurred last night between two men named McGrath and Moynahan, during which it is said the latter stabbed the former in the abdomen. MoGrath's depositionshave been taken. A.rather serious accident occurred in George-street last Saturday night, while fire-escape practice was being tried. Two firemen were coming down from a top storey of a drapery warehouse, when the rope broke, and the two men fell through a verandah on to the pavement. Two boys named Finlayson were struck by the men as they landed, and were stunned — one remained unconscious all night — but neither are severely injured. The firemen esoaped with a few bruises. FATALIACCIDENT WHILE OUT SHOOTING. A Fortrose telegram brings word that a young gentleman named Slater, recently from Home, who was on a visit to Mr. E. S. Vernon, of Tois-tois station, had been discovered lying dead beside a creek in the bush. He had been out shooting, and the gun had evidently discharged itself, as the top of the young man's head was blown clean off. His body had evidently lain all night.
