DEFERRED-PAYMENT HOLDINGS IN THE PARIHAKA DISTRICT. TIIE following report has been sent in by the Ranger to the CommisHioner of Crown Lands : — I have the honor to forward you a report on certain land sold on terms of deferred-payments under the Land Act. 1877, in the Parihaka District. Those who, have purchased prior to May 4th, 1881 should, besides personally residing on the land, have cleared and grassed onetwentieth of their respective allotments. In the latter respect they have in all cases done more than they weie required to do, but they have not fulfilled the former condition. The Messrs. Stent and Reed all reside (when together) <on Allotment 6, Block 8, their excuse being the loneliness of the situatiou during the recent Maori disturbance. Mr. Grey visits the land occasionally, but generally resides at Okato. Mr. McCarthy is a labourer, who has to leave the farm occasionally in order to obtain work. Of the remaining twelve holders mentioned in the schedule, five are honafide residents — viz., Quickenden, Fleming, Oxley, Thomas Morrow, and Richard Morrow. Two others — Humphreys and Collins — can only occasionally reside, as they are compelled to obtain work elsewhere. Mr. Reed has built and resides on I his cash allotment, No. 86, clone to the main road. Mr. Stevenson holds the hotel at Rahotu, and resides there. Messrs. Hogan and Bolger, I believe, intend to occupy as soon as they can get up their huts. I would respectfully suggest that notices be sent to all who are not resident, fixing a time within which they must personally occupy the land. So far the improvements made in the district are not very great, the various settlers not having sufficient confidence in native matters to risk much ; but they all state their intention of pushing on with fencing and cultivations as fast as their circumstances will allow them; and I think there is a fair prospect of tho district being cultivated and settled upon before the time arrives for the next inspection. i
