POLICE COURT.

Monday, June 12.— Before 0. E. Rawson, Esq., R.M. Bheach op Bye-laws. — Michael Daniells was charged with having committed a breach of the Borough Bye-laws by failing to maintain a light at a fence erected by him across Brougham-street. The defendant did not appear. Constable Lester stated that on Gth instant he went to the end of Brougham-street where the defendant is excavating. He saw a fence erected ucross the street at each end of the works. There was no light on either fence between 6 and 9 p.m. There was a lamp erected on both fences, but they were not lighted. A person might have ridden against the fence without noticing it, as it was a dark night. — Constable Henry stated that he was on duty from 9 p.m. on the Cth instant to 5 a.m. on the 7th. He visited the fence across Brougham-street five times, and he found no light on either fence during that time. — Sergeant Duffin slated thnt he had spoken to the defendant several times about not keeping a light on the fences. Defendant stated to Sergeant Duffin that the lamps were approved of by Mr. Holmes, and he (Danielle) lit them, and that was all he had to do with them. — Mr. Goodull said that he had spoken to Mr. Daniells since, and Daniells had made arrangements with the Gas Manager so that tho lights would be maintained in future. — Defendant was fined £1 and costs.
