SPORTING. MR. HATELY AS HANDICAPPER.
In' deciding to retaiu the services of Mr* Hatch* as hondicapper (says the Wanganu' /lerald), the members of the Wanganui Jockey Club have acted wisely and well. The dissatisfaction openly expressed or whispered with bated breath, by the southern club with respect to the honesty of the handicapping in the past, has had no parallel here. The fullest confi lence is felt by the sporting community in Mr. Hately's uprightness and ability, and his continuance in the office he has so honorably filled for many years will give the warmest satisfaction. Mr. Hately's judgment is not immaculate. Like all other mortals he is liable to make mistakes, but then it is firmly believed that when mistakes do occur, and really they are not often or important, the errors are those of judgment only. Like Ciesar? wife, a handicapper should be above suspicion, and Mr. nately occupies that proud position. The career of the Wanganui Jockey Club of late years has been one of increasing prosperity, and Mr. Hately has materially assisted the progress by his capital handicapping. The Club, therefore, in deciding to "stick" to Mr. Hately did a graceful act of justice.
