The Taranaki Herald. TUESDAY. OCTOBER 12. 1880.

Much anxiety and apprehension naturally prevails amongst all classes of the Civil Service now that dismissals are being so promiscuously sent to nil parts of the Colony. We learn that in Wellington a panic nearly prevails — no man feeling sure but that his turn may come next. All sorts of rumours are afloat as to what changes are to take place, but amongst them we think the following arc the most reliable: — With regard to the changes of District Judges and Resident Magistrates it is said that Mr. R. Becthain goes from Timaru to Wellington ; Mr. G. L. Mellish. from Christchurch to Timaru ; Mr. C. Whitcfoord, from Kaiapoi to Chrislchurch; Mr. J. l>e.s\vick, from Lyttelton to Kaiap >i ; Mr. I. N. Watt, from Port Chalmers to Oamaru ; Mr. J. N. Wood, from lUverton to Invercargill ; Messrs. T. W. Parker, H. M'Culloch. and H. S. Wardell (Wairarnpa). retiring on pensions. Mr. Mansfield has obtained twelve months leave of absence (on full pay), and goes to England. The changes in the police are reported as f jllows :— Superintendent James will be transferred from Wellington to Wanganui. taking charge of that and the Taranaki District, and Commissioner Shearman assuming command of the Wellington District, Inspector Thompson that of Auckland, Thames, and the extreme North ; Inspector Scully of Napier and the East Coast ; Inspector Atchison of Nelson and Marlborough ; Commissioner Broharn of Canterbury and Westland ; and Commissioner Wcldon of Otago and Southland. Ib is further reported that of the eleven Inspectors who will be retained out of the twenty-three, seven will be stationed in the South Island and fonr in the North. From what we can learn the alterations and appointments will not in every case be conducive to the efficiency of the service.
