DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER, GISBOBNE, August 28. News has been received of the death of John Greening 1 , aged 74, of Mahia, near Walker's station. The deceased was an old whaler, and had resided for the last forty years at Mabia, near Portland Island, during which time he had, at his own expense, kept a light burning at night as a signal for coasting vessels. By this means and by his kindliug signal fires on the beach many vessels were saved from being lost daring the severe gales along the coast. All possible attention was bestowed on the deceased daring bis last illness. FIRE AT JOHNSONVILLE. Wellington, August 28. An eight-roomed house near Johnsonville was destroyed by fire on Taes. day night. The building was occupied by two single men, and owned by a man named Stratford. The origin of the fire is ankuown. The house was insured in the London and Lancashire for £200. STEAMER WALLACE ASHORE. Hokitika, August 28. The following telegram was re. ceived from Ross on Friday evening — " The s.B. Wallace grounded on the north spit of the Okarita in trying to enter." VESSEL TURNED UP ALL RIGHT. i Christchdrch, August 28. | The cutter Norval, supposed to have been lost offthe Amuri Bluff daring the late gale, has arrived safely at Lyttelton. RAILWAY EMPLOYEES STRIKE. At a meeting of railway employees last night a telegram was received from Dunedin asking co-operation in resisting the proposed 10 per cent, redaction in [wages. It w as resolved to reply that tthe employees had already decided to resist the reduction ; also decided to hold a mass meeting on the subject on Saturday. Dunedin, August 28. A large meeting of railway employees was held last night, who appointed deputation to wait on Mr. Conyers and to attend the Christchurch meeting to be held on Saturday. HOTEL BURNT. The Taapeka Flat Hotel has been totally destroyed by fire. The building was insured in the National for £2,500, and the stock in the Norwich Union for £300. THE WAIKAIA SEAT. It is said that Captain McKenzie will come forward for the Waikaiaseat, and pressure is being brought to bear on Mr. Bastings to stand. RETIREMENT OF JUDGE BATHGATE. Judge Bathgate will retire at the end of the month. FIRE AT PORT CHALMERS. A fire occurred at noon on Friday at Port Chalmers in the house occupied by Captain Pilot London. The fire brigade were quickly in attendance, bat so rapid was the spread of the flames that, despite all they could do, the place was soon a heap of burning ashes. Two cottages adjoining, occupied by Messrs. Connell and Leish, were also damaged by tho flames. Connell loses to a considerable extent. Captain Londeu's house was owned by Mitchell, and was insnred in the Norwich Union for £400, bat tho captain's goods were totally uninsured. The cottages were ownpd by R. Nicholls, and were insured in the Norwich Union for £150. Connell has a policy over his farniture in the Union office for £75.
