MARTON-R ANG I I'IK E £ RACES. [Telegraphed hy our Special Correspondent.'] These races took [dace on Now Year's Day. The weather was delightful — the attendance from the surrounding districts being very large. First Day— January 1. Handicap Hurdles, of 40 suvs. Distance, 2 miles. Mr. Eraser's Rangatira 1 Mr. Campion's Victor ... ... ... 2 Mr. Scott's Abolition 3 King Don and Banshee also started. Betting, by totalisator, 4 to 1 on Rangatira and Gazelle. All the horses jumped well, miking the race a very pretty one. All got over the first jump, but Banshee b.iulke I at the second, and spoiled her chance. Gazelle and Victor led alternately, Rmgatira holding back to the last. On coming to the last jump, Campion let out Rangatira, who quickly assume i the lead, and came down the .straight with Victor at his quarters. Rangatira ultimately won by a length. Betting, nearly 4 to 1 on Astronomer and Rocket. The Baron was outpaced from the first ; he was never in it. Rocket made the running, closly followed by Petrucio and Astronomer. At the mile post Astronomer crept up. being full of running. Rocket fell back at the mile and a-half, allowing Petrucio and Astronomer to take the lead. At the distance post. Campion called on Petrucio, but Astronomer held him safe, and starting off from ,he rush, won comfortably by a length. Rockci •ras four lengths behind Petrucio. Time, 3min. 40scc. Railway Handicap, of 100 soys. Distance, VI miles. Mr. Goodruau's York 1 Randwick 2 Foam 3 OUiwa, Flora McDonald, Commission, Whiche, and Hanlon also started. Bcttiog, 2A to 1 against York: 5 to 1 against Otawa; (5 to 1 against Foam. Randwick and Hanlon made the running until the latter ran off the course. York, pulling double, went on second, closely attended by Foam, the rear rank being led by Otawa. Little or no alteration was made in the respective posil ions, other than the rider of York had a difficulty in keeping back. Rounding the bend for the straight run, York was just "shaken up, and he soon had Rand- \ wick collared. The latter cut it, and went inside the course, but the boy soon had him back. York came sailing in an easy winner by two length". Foam was a length. behind Randwick. Otawa never got up into the front rank, and was never dangerous. Time, 3min. 21.Vsec. Lillian led the rield a merry pace for a mile, with Lawrence second, and i\Y. third. At the top of the course, the field closed together, and for several hundred yards the horses were in a heap. My Dream and Chief then came away, and ran a, severe race down the straight. The former lasted the longest, and won by half a length. Chancellor appeared in the paddock badly bitten by mosquitoes : King Quail was wound up to perfection. A go'xl start was efTectc'l, Chancellor leading the field : Otawa second. The pace was made pretty warm, causing Rocket and Petruchio to tail away. At the mile and a-half post Otawa assumed the lead. King Quail going on second, aud Chancellor close up, third. They remained very close together for a quarter of a mile, all the leaders apparently being in it. Coining round the turn Otawa and King Quail came .way, amidst loud cries of ''The favourite's beaten!" All dowu the straight the two leaders went at it, neck and neck — u'r.st one and then the other getting his head in front. Loch Lomond baulked at the water jump, and all went into the water. Lone Hand smashed a fence down and made a clear passage, and led over the road through Bowman's garden, but refused the jump rising the hill. Sport.snian led across country until stopped by the gorse fence on the top of the hill ; here lie Was joined by the other horses, all unanimously declining to negociate the gorse fence. After a weary delay, Lone Hand came forward again, but systematically baulked at every jump, but at laht took it, and camo .in the winner, distancing Sportsman, who was second. Mr. G. Marshall (late of New Plymouth) of Wanganui, won the &20 Cup Handicap, after throe glorious contests. Over a thousand people were on the ground. In tho second e\eut for the Cup, Marshall, Skect, and Minnix ran a dead heat for first place. Maiiclli, of Opunake, took the Maiden, and Minnix the hop-stop-and-jiunp. Running Long Jump — Marshall, 1. Handicap Hundred Yards — Minnix took the first place. The mile race was won by Yaughan, Dawson not being in good form.
