An interesting presentation look place in Wellington on September 27 to Mr. R. 0. Hamcrton on his retirement from the pojt of organist to St. Peter's Church, which ho has ably filled for eight years past. The movement was strictly confined to the choir, who invited Mr. Hamcrton to a social evening at the .Ghuzncc-strect schoolroom, tho incumbent, Archdeacon Stock, also being present by invitation, and presiding with hie accustomed geniality. The presentation was performed by Mr r Waters, one of the churchwardens.' . Ib consistod of an exceedingly handsome photograph album, in quite a new style, beautifully illuminated and illustrated, containing tho potraits of tho choir, with whom Mr. Hamerton had been so long associated. Mr. Waters alluded in eulogistic terms to Mr. Hamer ton's long and valuable services, Mr. Dixon (tho other churchwarden) and the Archdeacon following in a similar strain. Mr. Hamcrton suitably expressed his acknowledgments, declaring that the choir a second time had taken him quito by surprise. Music and refreshments fol-' lowed, a very pleasant evening being passed. The durability and other qualities of the 1 metal made from the Taranaki iron sand is, shortly to bo put to a practical test, Mr. E. M. Smith has received an order from the| Hon. J. Macandrew, Minister of Public Works, to make a set of wheels and cogwheels used in the railways, from tho metal made out of Taranaki iron sand* For, the i purpose of casting these wheels, Mr. Taylor has made a pattern oat of kauri tho e^act pattern of the wheels rcquirod. The pattern is an cxcellont piece of work, and cvory care has been taken to make the casting a success. The inscription on the pattern is the " Hon. J. Macandrew, Minister of Publio Works, N.Z. from Taranaki Iron Sand." We understand the preparations for casting will be finished in a fow days, and as soon as all arrangomeats are completed the casting will take place at Mr. Vivian's foundry.

The Election for a memiier of the House of Representatives for the Town of Now Plymouth commenced this morning at nine o'clock, and the electors evinced no lack of interest as to the result of tho contest. Saturday being market day, it was very inconvenient for business people to leave thoir counters for the purpose of attending the election, but nevertheless a great number of electors found time to record their votes, although, no doubt, at tho cost of neglecting their business. Speculations were rife as to tho result of tho poll, and the utmost good humour provailed on both sides during tho day.
