TAXATION.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — Having heard J it stated by a few who oppose him that Captain Skeet' s address to,tbo electors of Grey ,and Bell district' was only " clap-trap," to catch votes, I should liko through the medium of your valuable columns to call attention to ono part of this so , called "clap-trap," and that part is taxation. Captain Skeet spolco to a ouistituency, whoso only qualification is possession of land, and said that he considered the fairest tax was an acreage tax, without any exomption, so that the poor man or rich in.-vi woald pay in proportion to the number of aores they might possess. And thU, by men who are blinded by partisanship, m tormod "claptrap," when they are told "if you return me, if possible £ will tax your land, deeming it a b>ld, manly, and honest expression o(' opinion." I heartily agree with it ; mainly, for its simplicity iv operation, and the fact that only one halfpenny per acre would prove to be no small itom in our ro. venue. — I am, <feo., William J. Wells.
Some unknown lover of truth says, " Tho man who makos tho oilbo at a hotel is nevorsoenby the public. That's ono reason why nouo of thorn are ever found dead in the alley." , ; A cynical man insUts that tho fewer relations or frieuds we have, tho happier we are. In your poverty tlioy never help you — iv your prosperity they help themselves. Lately a Yankee fell from the stairway of tho third story of a house, and lit on a conservatory. " No — I wasn't muoli hart myself," bo said, iv relatiug the occurrence, " but I guess I rather dented in that glass box,"
